As of the first week of January 2023, the Mexican Professional Golf Tour (GGPM) will be integrated into the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR)
MEXICO CITY.- (December 28, 2022).- Historical. In an unprecedented event in the national sport, today the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) announced that the Mexican Professional Golf Tour (GGPM) will be part of the World Ranking starting the first week of January 2023.
After almost five years of negotiations, the Directors and the Technical Committee of the Official World Golf Ranking decided to admit the Mexican Professional Golf Tour into their ranks, the only paying golf circuit in the national territory, which began activities in 2017.
The news was released through a letter from OWGR Chairman Peter Dawson addressed to GGPM Commissioner José Miguel Bejos:
“It is a great pleasure to be able to confirm that the Professional Golf Tour of Mexico will be admitted to the Official World Golf Ranking from week 1 of 2023 ending on January 8, 2023. The ranking points will be assigned to the official tournaments of accordance with OWGR regulations.
"This is a significant development for golf, and the OWGR is deeply encouraged by its achievement in resuming a Tour with more than 50 years of history and the continued efforts in the development of the sport of golf in Mexico."
For his part, GGPM Commissioner José Miguel Bejos commented: “We are very proud that after almost 5 years of work, the Mexican Professional Golf Tour becomes part of the OWGR. It is one of the most important achievements that Mexican professional golf has had in recent years and we will continue with the commitment to promote golf in our country”.
Throughout five seasons and 50 tournaments, the Mexican Professional Golf Tour has seen players of the stature of Carlos Ortiz, current member of LIV Golf, the first champion of the circuit, as well as former PGA Tour José de Jesús " Camarón” Rodríguez, Roberto Díaz and Oscar Fraustro, and four-time PGA Tour Champions winner Esteban Toledo.
In five years of existence, the Mexican Professional Golf Tour has established itself as the most important platform for continental professionals to take the step to the most relevant international circuits in the world.
A clear example are players like the Guatemalan José Toledo, the Brazilian Alex Rocha, the Argentine Alan Wagner, as well as the Mexicans Sebastián Vázquez, Isidro Benítez and Raúl Pereda just to mention a few.
In the same way, figures such as the Americans Ken Duke, winner of the PGA Tour Travelers Championship in 2013 and Kevin Stadler, winner of the PGA Tour Phoenix Open in the 2013-14 season, have visited us.
